making seafoam || my stressful day in the kitchen

Friday, September 30, 2016

rainy fall days have come

Sometimes you have those good days in the kitchen, and others, well. you just won't. give. up. I got this brilliant idea to make seafoam (this stuff is called a TON of different things btw). It's like foamed up sugar candy that hardens and you cover it in chocolate. google it. I don't care to look at it again.

so I started my first batch around 3:00 p.m.
-  "oh wow. this wasn't hard at all it took barely any time look its so cool! *sends pics to friends*
1st fail - the wax paper stuck to ittttttt they didn't sayyy iittt wouldddddd

second batch - 4:30 p.m.
- MY THERMOMETOR WONT WORK NO NO the world is ending now what LET'S EYE IT yeah *applauds* awesome idea
- okay, not as fluffy..it's okay.
- *drops phone* well, i just tested out my phone case.
2nd fail - IT WOULDN"T SET i guess i didn't cook it enough ugh oh and I lathered the pan in oil and that messed it up too HOW DO I MAKE THIS STUFF NOT STICK
2.5 fail - let's take it and boil it down into a syrup. okay, accidentally leave the stove on high AND MAKE A BURNING MASS OF STUFF. whoops. *pours down drain* no one saw that

so around this time I was quite ready to give up. But Bree was like, "get it ready and I'll do it."

3rd batch - 8:20 p.m.
- used a nonstick baking sheet that *worked* but make it flatter than it should be. This stuff hardened in a few minutes and actually tasted pretty good the next day. the chocolate was off in flavor tho. xP success? maybe.

oh, and after all that I think I ate like three pieces.

have you ever tried making candy?
do you ever have a kitchen day that is just a complete fail?

  1. I've never tried to make candy, but there was one time I was making cinnamon rolls and it took awhile for them to actually get into the oven.

First, I accidentally doubled the milk, but didn't realize it until after it had cooled to room temp and after I had already mixed in the dry ingredients and let it rise. So that was about a three-hour waste of time.

The second time, I took my eyes off the milk warming on the stove for a grand total of five seconds so I could rinse and dry my hands. When I turned around again, there was a huge mountain of milk-foam pouring all over the stove, so I had to redo the milk again.

Then, the third time, I was pouring the milk into a bowl so it could cool off, then I spilled about a cup of it all over the counter. I did not redo the milk a fourth time, I just added milk straight from the carton because I was thoroughly tired of everything kitchen-related. XD

    1. ohhhhh, boy. I've made cinnamon rolls before--my mom taught me that is.

sounds like you have had some bad experiences with that milk..*feels for you* I understand. You DID conquer it tho, right?! xD

    2. Yeah, they eventually turned out okay. I was supposed to make them for an extended family gathering the next day, so as much as I wanted to throw the towel in, I couldn't deny my family the privilege of fresh cinnamon rolls. :D

Ooh! And there was another time when I forgot to put baking powder in a batch of biscuits so they ended up tasting like dry piecrust.

    2. The part where your sister stepped in was the best part, haha! Like, how is it that as soon as you've REALLY decided to give up, someone has to try to fix everything and make you persevere longer ;)? And then as I typed that, I realized my mom would probably say I was that person, ha!

haha...but i do love baking (literally just made this casserole thing and put it in the oven like five minutes ago....AND ALL THIS FALL RAIN MAKES ME WANT TO GO MAKE COOKIES. Maybe I'll do it tomorrow?) but it is quite annoying sometimes. AT LEAST YOU GOT TO EAT SOME THOUGH :)

  5. Baking and cooking are some of my favorite things to do, but even so, I've had my fair share of flops. Like those macaroons I tried to make from scratch when I was 11? Yeah....

Anyhow, this made me laugh. xD

    1. lol yes the fails can be quite annoying. I'm the one who is constantly checking the recipe too so it really bugs be when it doesn't turn out. xD Guess I'm a bit more of a perfectionist than I though. hahaha

  9. OH GOSH DO I KNOW THIS FEELING VERY VERY WELL. xD I've had so many kitchen fails, especially when I had a food blog. Mostly I would just be like "oh well the recipe says this but I don't have that ingredient and I want to make this vegan and gluten free so I'll just use this and this!" *shakes head in dismay* not smart, Abbie. not smart.

SO YES I FEEL YOUR PAIN I REALLY DO. *gives you waffles because they are the only thing I know how to make well every time* also duuuude these pictures are beautiful <3 <3 <3

  11. OHHH NOOO. This is why I hate the kitchen. xD

I once "tried" making chocolate chip cookies. I put eight little cookie dough balls on the pan, and when I took it out, they all melted into one, giant, cookie dough spread. It was kind of crusty and thin and burnt, but I still ate it because I SPENT TIME ON THAT. :P

    Sigh. xD
